Swimming

REQUIREMENT

For swimming it is stated that by the end of Key Stage 2 pupils should be taught to:

  • Pace themselves in floating and swimming challenges related to speed, distance and personal survival, swim unaided for a sustained period of time over a distance of at least 25m
  • Use recognized arm and leg actions, lying on their front and back (doggy paddle is not a recognized action)
  • Use a range of recognised strokes and personal survival skills

(e.g. frontcrawl, backcrawl, breaststroke, sculling, floating and surface diving).

ETHOS

Many of you will remember the old 'Top Up' scheme which provided intensive swimming courses for swimmers unable to reach 25m in year 6.  This has now evolved into the School Swimming Grant. The Partnership will now fund an additional swimming teacher for one of our target year groups (3 & 4) with the aim being to have no non swimmers, although some will still be weak by the end of year 4. By targeting the pupils earlier it allows the pupils to then have 2 more years to perfect strokes and develop stamina in order to meet the year 6 minimum statutory requirement of basic water skills and a 25m swim with a recognised stroke.

To claim your funding please contact Sarah Humber-Kelly with details of the year group, number of pupils, which pool you swim at and dates. or 07764183123/01227464600

The Canterbury Partnership are currently working with the following swimming pools: Kingsmead Leisure Centre, Langton Lanes and Herons Swimming pool.
